| Dave Halls has been playing jazz in Sydney
for over ten years at venues such as the Basement, Soup Plus,
Bar Me (formerly El Rocco jazz club), Joan Sutherland Performing
Arts Centre and all the major hotels and function centres
around Sydney.
He started out playing in the Blue Mountains NSW at venues
like the Grand View Hotel in Wentworth Falls. He took lessons
with Gary Daley before moving to Sydney and being mentored
by Sydney jazz icon Serge Ermoll.
He has played in many bands over the years, including The
Feathered Frog, Mistura Fina, Mercury Blue, Hibiscus, Tracey
Levett Band, Liz Geyson Band, and his own Dave Halls Band.
Under Serge Ermoll's direction, Dave did his first major
concert at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in 1995,
playing in a band featuring Warrick Alder, Steve Elphick,
Simon Barker and Mark Simmons.
He later shared the piano stool in a number of Serge's bands,
which featured musicians such as Dave Smith, Jimmy Mitchell,
Christina Williams, Lenny Young and others.
Dave launched his CD Walking Home in 2001 before a packed
crowd at Sydney's famous Soup Plus jazz restaurant. Mor recently
he has worked on projects with artists like Tracey Levett,
Grace Chung, Liz Geyson and Steve Morrison. He played on Steve
Morrison's CD Silently, which was launched in March 2006 at
The Basement.
Dave teaches at the Five Dock Music School in Sydney's inner
West. He co-wrote with Serge Ermoll an article on the Ermollian
approach to creative improvisation for Sounds Australia in
an edition dedicated to the art of improvisation.
