Mike has been playing trumpet for over twenty years, performing throughout Australia and Europe. He has played in all sorts of groups, ranging from symphony orchestras through to jazz, funk and rock bands.
Mike's interest in Latin music began as a teenager when his trumpet teacher switched him on to the Afro-Cuban jazz of Dizzy Gillespie. You'll hear that the rhythmic drive of Cuban and Caribbean music has had a big impact on his improvisational style.
Off the bandstand, Mike completed the jazz studies course at the Sydney Conservatorium and holds a degree in ethnomusicology. He is now completing a thesis on the music of Miles Davis.
When not playing or teaching music, Mike drives a cruise boat, reads about music and history, and dreams of sailing to Trinidad...
